THE KHAN COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH LAB/GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE EXAMINES INTERVENTIONS IN LOW-INCOME AND UNDERPRIVILEGED COMMUNITIES, FOR THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PREVENTION OF MENTAL HEALTH MORBIDITY. CURRENT PROJECTS ARE LOCATED IN EAST PALO ALTO AND RURAL GUATEMALA. THE LAB IS NOW MOVING INTO THE SPACE OF TECHNOLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH, WITH A GOAL TO CREATE PRODUCTS THAT WILL DISSEMINATE MOBILE AND INTERNET-BASED MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTIONS TO REGIONS OF THE WORLD WITHOUT READY ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.
Lack of local resources and infrastructure for mental health care provides a significant barrier to mental health care access within at risk communities around the globe.
Mental Health Disorders, and among them depression, are among the leading cause of years liver with disability worldwide, yet most individuals with mental health problems in low and middle income countries never receive care.
Mobile- and web-based platforms can provide access to mental health education and self-help interventions for individuals facing a paucity of local options.
Project Mental Health for All will involve the creation of an automated web-based directory of open-source mobile and internet-based applications for mental health.
This project will include educational and self-help interventions with the potential to later expand to include guided interventions. The project shall begin with applications for depression and later expand on to other mental health disorders. Students will be involved in all phases of the project with milestones for the initial phase outlined below. Student involvement will be most crucial for the programming and website design components. SUBSEQUENT PHASES WILL INCLUDE RESEARCH-BASED TESTING OF ONLINE INTERVENTIONS.
The initial phase milestones include:
Identifying components of an automated search, including types of evidence-based applications/interventions and ways to evaluate the evidence base
Creating and testing a search algorithm
Multiple iterations and modifications to the algorithm based on testing and feedback
We are looking for student with experience in or willingness to learn the following:
Experience designing and/or testing search algorithms (specific to internet browsing preferred)
General website design skills/expertise
